Diet
Beluga whales are eating opportunities. We eat salmon, eulachon, tomcod, smell, char, rainbow sole, whitefish, cod, saffron and Arctic, herring, shrimp, scallops, octopus, crabs, oysters, mussels, snails and sandworms .

Population
Although it is difficult to get an exact number because they are widely distributed, it is estimated that the number of white whales in the hundreds of thousands.

Unlike other marine mammals, Beluga can move their head up, down, and side-to-side because the cervical vertebrae of them are not merged. This adaptation is supposed to help them maneuver and catch prey in the mud-laden or ice covered areas.

Habitat & Range
Beluga whales are distributed throughout the Arctic waters and the subarctic seasonal ice cover. We live in the waters off the coast of Russia, Greenland, Canada, Norway and the United States (Alaska). Genetic studies have determined that there are five white whale stocks in US waters: Cook Inlet, Bristol Bay, the eastern Bering Sea, Chukchi Sea and the eastern Beaufort Sea.

Behavior
Beluga for food in the water column and on the seafloor. This usually occurs at depths up to 1,000 feet, but they can dive to a depth of at least twice this. Beluga congregate and travel in groups from 2-3 to as many as several hundred. Some migrants within their limits, while others are still residents of a specific area. They are found near the coast or in the open ocean. In the summer months in some areas where they gather at the river mouth of the river to feed and calve.

Beluga uses sound to find their prey. They also use sound to communicate and navigate by producing a series of clicks, chirps and whistles.

Born
Beluga children usually dark gray. The gray gradually lighten as they grow up - reaching their permanent color by seven years for women and nine for men. Calves nurse for about two years.
